Birdwatching in the Shetlands June 2008
9th June 2008, Wildlife

I spent the first week of June in the Shetlands taking photos of the myriad of wildlife on the Islands.

As well as the main island, I visited Yell, Unst & Fetlar using the small but frequent ferry service that serves the 15 inhabited islands (out of 100). Staying in the fishing and commercial port of Lerwick, three days were spent travelling the islands from extreme North to extreme South.

Some of the photography was limited by the fog that covered the islands for much of my three days.
The famous Shetland Ponies look a bit bedraggled due to the driving rain on my first day!

Some of the photography was precarious having to lean over dry stone walls to take pictures of puffins with a 600 foot drop below their positions!

I viewed over 30 different species plus many I could not identify. On Fetlar I spotted a Black Headed Bunting which was way off its usual track probably blown in by the constant easterly winds of late. Unfortunately I couldn't take a shot as it was too far away.
But I did see a lot of Lapwing which are quite rare in the South of England. It was a great trip; next time I hope to visit the Islands when the sun is out!
